Last minute decision to hang out tonight? You can always roll up to bar and feel good about it.

Charlotesville (nTelos Wireless) Pavillion

The big white spaceship at the end of the Mall compelling earthlings to worship at its amphitheater of incredible music and nationally touring bands.

En

The Garage

This is ACTUALLY a garage, at a house, and they invite bands and people who want to hear them. You sit on a grassy hill across the street and relax. No big whuup, just naturally rad.

En

Jefferson Theater

The fanciest place you’ll ever go to to see people break guitars and scream onstage. Midsize venue in thousand dollar shoes.

En

The Paramount Theater

The fanciest place period. From operettas to sober conversations with world famous geniuses, your IQ and class level rise as you walk in the door.

En

The Southern Cafe and Music Hall

The other venue you should have gone to last night. CVIL makes it difficult to choose but rest assured whatever they’re booking on any given night is worth going to.

Fo

The Box

Chas, Tash, Ben, Church, Matt... The only bar in town that I learned EVERYONE’s name in the first week of writing this thing. The first bar that I’m going to MISS when I leave. Have some of their good juju. Go.

Fo

Miller's Downtown

Eatin’ in the front and liquor in the back. The perfect blend of lowbrow and lowerbrow. Third floor’s the charm.

Fo

Para Coffee

Tucked away in the pocket of UVA’s perfectly pressed khakis, Para doesn’t give a rats ass what your daddy does. Honestly good coffee and outdoor seating. Simple.

Fo

Rapture

Consistently attracting the best local and touring bands to it’s main stage and dance club, this New Orleanic venue has all the voodoo. Purple pool tables and perfect lighting make this a great casual night out spot.

Fo

Twisted Branch Tea Bazaar

My favorite place in CVIL. Tea house with great live music, better tea, awesome ambiance, an adorable staff and damn, just the most welcoming and comfortable spot in Central VA. You HAVE to go there.

Ga

The Bridge PAI

This is CVIL’s Factory. Incubator of wild ideas and purveyour of "unsafe" art, the Bridge makes up for a number of sins in a triple-seatbelted overculture.

Random Row Books

I want to live here. More than a bookstore, it’s a statement. Large, open warehouse space with great murals on the walls and an overabundance of laidbackability.

Fo

Fardowners

Live music, straightforward American menu, like a Budweiser on your neighbors’ porch. Being directly across from train tracks makes me want to call it precious, but I’m scared it might punch me.

Fo

Mudhouse Coffeehouse

Located at the corner of Hipster and Hillbilly, this leather-bound, theatre-curtained, high-ceilinged redoubt delivers escape with style.

En

The National

This venue saved our souls when it opened in 2008. It's a renovated historical landmark, as are a lot of Richmond venues - but with a lot of tech thrown in. The best bands come here and they're always booked full.

En

WRIR Richmond Independent Radio

The fine independent product of a long hard fought battle against radio conglomerates that insist you listen to Justin Bieber.

En

Landmark Theater

I still call this place the Mosque because the new name is lame. The Richmond Forum and the odd Off-Broadway production that skips into town land right here, VCU campus' architectural masterpiece.

Fo

Cous Cous

A little Marrakech and a lot of heart. Beautiful and delicious, with a healthy bar scene after hours.

Fo

Empire

Our CBGB’s. The spot has changed names and hands over the decades but has always remained a legendary hole for the punk and metal horde.

Fo

Ipanema Cafe

Vegetarian/Vegan restaurant with giant tofu bricks of history as one of RVA’s locals’ all-time favorites. Don’t miss the delicious pie!

Fo

Nile Ethiopian Restaurant

The only authentic Ethiopian restaurant with an Ethiopian Olympic skiier on staff. Probably ever. Also, if Afro-Beta is going on - you HAVE to check out that awesomeness.

Fo

Strange Matter

THE venue that touring metal, punk and indie bands want to play. The list of “who played here” is long and un-Richmondlike braggy.

Fo

Urban Farmhouse

Foodies, chefs and gourmets shop here when they go to heaven. The restaurant features their local and seasonal produce.

Gallery 5

This is the space that re-invented Richmond’s art scene. They just smacked the bowtie and toupee off the sucka. High five Amanda!
